RKJVL's New Idea (1989)

For Violin and Marimba. First performed by the composer (marimba) and Nancy Coade (violin) in Fall, 1989 at Oberlin and the University of Michigan. Composed in Moedling, Austria and a hotel room in Florence, Italy.

Program notes:

RKJVL's New Idea is a fable of sorts. The marimba "gives birth to" the violin, "nurtures" and "raises" it, accompanies it, and is ultimately conquered by it. The marimba part begins in primarily perfect fifth intervals, representing its dominance and stability. The violin "learns" its ways and proceeds to undermine it, eventually flaunting its own mastery of the marimba's language.
