GROUND SQUIRREL
I saw a little ground squirrel
We're young and strong
Many more, many more
He squeaked and peeped up at me
He won't be around long
Many more, many more
Poor thing won't outlive me
I think, as we lunch along the treeline
Many more, many more
I've got things to do
No time to play
No time for watching another survive
No time, no time
Here comes another sprite
He eyes me square
But I've got more to write, not a minute to spare
Many more, many more
I'm in top form - a full plate!
Eating less and gaining weight
Such a wonderful life
Grandchild of squirrel
What a steady peer
Then you're off!
Many more, many more
I rise early, labored gait
Head is heavy, hour's late
My you're a quick fellow!
Which generation be you?
Many more indeed!
Won't you stop a moment for me?
Not squeak and tweet and peep and flee?
I had no time for you, 'tis true
Though alas, hear me, my work was you.
